In Jewish tradition, genealogy is rooted in the very origins of the people itself. In the first book of the Bible (Genesis) much commentary is devoted to the lineage of the Patriarchs. The very definition of who is a Jew, while not capable of being narrowed down to a single concept, in the case of those born in to the faith requires matrileneal proof of identity. Before attempting to trace Jewish ancestors it is helpful to have some understanding of their migration, beliefs and traditions. This is a throughly revised and updated edition of the booklet first compiled in 1982 by Isobel Mandy.
