Poll Books 1696-1872A Directory to Holdings in Great BritainFourth edition (2008). By Jeremy Gibson and Colin Rogers. 56 pages. ISBN 978-1-906280-09-3.Until 1832 the right to vote was restricted to those with a “forty shilling” property qualification. Nevertheless these number tens of thousands. With reform vastly more were enfranchised. However, it was only in 1872 that the ballot became secret. Throughout the 18th century and until 1872 the names of those voting and the way they voted were frequently published, and survive as printed Poll Books. For this new edition (the first since 1994) record offices have been freshly circulated. Archivists have gone to great trouble to ensure that entries reflect the fresh cataloguing of the past decade. Numerous changes of repository are also updated. New finding aids and publications are shown. See a review of this book in The Oxfordshire Family Historian (August 2008) Pricing
